THE GOLDEN RULE

Luke 6:31 NIV   31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

The Bible is full of life lessons that we can apply today.  This simple one-line scripture seems so hard to live by; yet, it’s quite easy.  Do you give out what you would want back?  Do you treat others the same way you would want to be treated?

Here’s a beautiful story:

There was couple who grew older together.  They were madly in love with each and got married over 40 years ago.  The husband was much older than his wife.  As they were both approaching senior citizen status, the wife looked at the husband and said, “You’re getting a big belly, your hair is balding and graying.”  The husband did not retaliate, but reminded her that he had been sick and was taking several medications that have resulted in his swelling and “not so handsome” appearance.  As time went on the wife made more statements, “You’re all bent over now, your hair is receding even more and you’re graying more than ever.”  “Can you get some style and stand up straight?  Never responding with retaliation, the husband just dropped his head.

One day, as the wife sat on the side of her bed, the Holy Spirit convicted her as she reflected…  Just imagine if I were in my husband’s shoes.  How would I feel if he badgered me about my looks and changing body?  Have I been fair to him?  How have I made him feel?  Would I want him to make me feel the way I have made him feel?   After pondering the questions with a heavy heart,  the wife immediately ran to her husband and said, “I owe you an apology. Please forgive me for pointing out your physical changes. I too have changed.  I don’t look the same either.
